The Importance of Day Care in the Black Community in the United Kingdom

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

By Efua Taylor In the past the establishment has always assumed that the Black Community took care of its older members through the extended family. Traditionally the elderly are cared for by the family and the burden is not on the shoulders of one or two members. The Elders are an important respected part of the family group and the community. They are not cast aside to feel worthless. However, in modern day Britain, this is a myth. Family breakdowns can happen in any community. The limited size of family homes; the trend towards children moving away to find work and/or affordable accommodation; youngsters growing up in a Me society with little respect for age, is resulting in more of our Elders living alone. Many of our Elders came over with The Five Year Plan. Many were invited to help rebuild Britain after the war. They came to work as hard as possible, in as many jobs as possible and then to retire back home and start a little business. But times changed, things got harder, taxes and bills higher, health deteriorated and the dream faded further and further away. Some came over as students and for various reasons did not qualify - money running out, trying to work and study at the same time, working all night and trying to attend college during the day, too high expectations, these led to failure; shame and embarrassment prevented them from returning home. Others came as political refugees. Through fear they became cut off from their own communities, not sure who to trust. These people are also likely to have a distrust of officials because of their past experiences. All these groups suffered from the racist attitudes of society and they built a wall of protection around themselves. Their houses, flat, rooms become a cocoon. Within those walls they feel safe. Their only forays out are to work, shopping and maybe church. (It is no coincidence that the Black churches are the fastest growing institutions in the country). Take away work and, if they do not have church or family to rely on, then disintegration begins. Retirement can bring loneliness and isolation and then fear takes over. The cocoon becomes a prison. Gradually people become inward looking. At first social mixing becomes difficult and then impossible. Anyone who invades their space is a threat. In many cases, a shoulder to lean on, a hand to hold or a friend to laugh or cry with could avert the crisis that leads to breakdown. Research carried out by MIND in l987 showed that Afro-Caribbeans are far more likely than other ethnic groups to be compulsorily detained in hospital and three times as likely to be diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. White people get depressed but African and Caribbean people with the same symptoms are considered mentally ill. There is little evidence that the situation is changed. Patients recovering from breakdown or maintained on medication need support. Research carried out by Dr. Martin Prince and colleagues at Royal Free Hospital indicates that recovery is accelerated more with the support of friends than family. That outside interaction and stimulation is needed. Social Groups, Luncheon Clubs and Centres can prevent breakdowns and self-imposed isolation. The social environment can bring some Elders back from the brink of mental deterioration. A place where the Elders can take part in activities based on their own cultures, relax with people of similar origins, shared memories, backgrounds, and enjoy their own foods, is essential. Those who started as strangers become friends who grow into the missing extended family. At an Age Concern Conference it was said that When you get old you need a reason to get up in the morning All Social Centres and Elders Clubs provide this reason, none more so than those geared to the need and culture of its members. They no longer feel isolated. Their extended family is waiting to greet them each day, to call them when they are sick and visit them when they are in hospital. How can we help? A phone call to a distant relative, an invitation to a meal (not just at Christmas), a card when you are on holiday; all go to making our Elders feel that they are thought of and needed. Of course, donations, however small, can help in keeping these social centres running. If you have a little time, volunteer at a Centre or just smile and greet a neighbour. You would if you were back home so why not here? You will do good and feel good. Monday, March 10th, 2008

By Albert Lee Gym balls come in different sizes to fit your exercise regimens. There are small ones that you can easily manipulate. The larger ones are perfect for some flexibility and balance exercises. There are also different materials for the gym ball but they are most commonly manufactured in rubber foam or plastic. Thus, people who use gym ball in exercises are advised to forego with sharp objects so as not to pierce the equipment. If you are all out to lose weight and become fit, then make sure that you maximize the use of your gym ball. Do exercises that will help you do exactly what you want. 1. Sit Around The gym ball is a perfect companion for beginners. It can be used when you are simply playing around or sitting around in the gym. You can practice with the simple moves to stretch some muscles. Sitting around with the ball may sound very ordinary. However, since doing so will not be easy, it will surely challenge your body. 2. Twists and Crunches Gym ball exercises can also focus on abdominal training. You can use the ball to maintain a posture as you proceed with your bends and movements. The gym ball also encourages a lot of muscle movement when you include this in your twists and crunches. A lot of action will take place as you learn to manage your ball with your gym exercises. With the gym ball, crunches will exercise even more the muscles in your midsection. The leg muscles are also challenged at the same time. 3. Do the Pushups You can also do pushups with your gym ball. You can use a smaller gym ball. Put it in your hands as you proceed in a pushup stance. Performing the pushup with the gym ball will definitely give a good work out to your upper body. Doing the pushups with the gym ball is definitely more difficult. However, this will surely help you develop faster what you want to achieve. 4. Bicep Curls The gym ball can also be used as you do your bicep curls. You can sit on the ball as you proceed with the normal curls. You will have more efficiency in the routine that you will do. Conclusion Using the gym ball in your fitness exercises is one sure way to achieve your goals. So to lose weight and have fun with it at the same time, make sure to have the gym ball as your companion. Target Marketing - What Are You Aiming For?

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

By Greg Roworth Is Advertising Viable? At the turn of the 20th century, department store magnate J.C. Penney acknowledged, Fifty percent of my advertising doesnt work. When questioned why he continued to do it all, he replied, Because I dont know which half isnt working. Over the course of the last century, most traditional advertisers accepted this situation as a reality that had to be put up with. The result has been that many organisations now develop marketing strategies based on the objective of branding, with the hope that brand recognition will attract customers. Today it is only really viable for large organisations with huge advertising budgets to use this style of marketing, which is dependent of two factors; frequency and reach. Both these factors are directly proportional to the amount of money you spend. The more money you pour in, the greater you can extend your frequency and reach. Unfortunately for smaller businesses, the cost required to develop the level of frequency and reach to make an impact on the market are almost prohibitive. Communicating With Our Market Our success in marketing comes down to the quality of our communication with our customers. There are three elements of our communication that we need to address; our message, the media we use and the market we serve. Gary Halbert, a well known direct marketing copywriter, likes to ask his students what advantage they think would help them sell the most hamburgers. He typically receives answers such as better grade of beef, better sauce, better location, lower price, and other similar suggestions. After the students finish he will say that he will allow the students to have all those advantages if they will allow him only one, and that if they allow him that advantage, he will win hands down. What is the advantage Gary Halbert wants? To have a starving crowd. How simple yet insightful. The most significant factor in marketing success is to find a market that is starving and desperate to have your product. The first question you need to ask is; who are the people that desperately want my product and how do I find them? Then you need to ask; how do I get my message through to them? Getting Attention In his book, Permission Marketing, Seth Godin claims that, on average, we are subjected to around 3,000 marketing messages each day. The message we need to understand from this situation, as marketers, is that it is becoming far more difficult to get our message through to our market, because the clutter of marketing messages makes it almost impossible to attract attention. We are now so adept at screening out advertising and marketing messages that it takes something significant to get through the filters. One lesson we can learn about what gets through is the way we tend to deal with SPAM, the irritating unsolicited email ads that somehow still seem to get through the filters we have established. When dealing with spam, most of us tend to click delete almost automatically when we dont recognise the sender of the email. We do this even when the subject line sounds interesting or enticing. We have learnt to turn off to interesting headlines and to be sceptical of promises that sound almost too good to be true. We have become hardened by repeated disappointment in the past. Our experience with email has taught us to be efficiently ruthless with communication that we dont deem necessary or is not from friends or colleagues. We just delete anything we dont care about without even reading it or without even glancing at what it is about. The messages that do get through are the ones that come from a trusted source. This habit is an indicator to us as marketers of how to get our messages through to our market and presents a real dilemma for small and medium size businesses in developing effective marketing strategies. The key is to work more on developing a trust relationship with your customer rather than developing an approach that resembles spamming. Aim For The Target With the effectiveness of mass marketing methods having deteriorated over the years to the point of relative ineffectiveness that they have now reached, the most important strategy for us in marketing has become identifying and targeting our starving crowd. Marketing now needs to be up close and personal to be effective. It doesnt matter how good our message is and what media we use, if we are not directing our communication to someone who is desperately hungry for our product we stand little chance of success. Even if they are starving but dont know us, the level of scepticism is such that they still may not trust us enough to buy our product, even if it is by far the best solution to their desperate need. What we need to do is identify specifically who are the members of our starving crowd and then woo them sensitively and relentlessly to gain their trust. Once we have their trust, we must continue to woo them to establish and deepen a relationship that makes them feel like they are important to us and that we are intent on looking after their needs as fully as possible. Can you describe your ideal customer? To effectively target your customers you need to be able to describe the ideal customer in intimate detail. What is their average age, sex, income, job type, etc? Are they single or in a committed relationship? Where do they live? How many children do they have? What type of car do they drive? What are their hobbies or sporting interests? What do they read or watch on TV? What are their favourite movies? How often do they use your product? How often do they buy it and in what quantities? If they are businesses; what industries are they in, how many employees do they have, are they stable or fast growing? These factors are known as demographics and psychographics. To more effectively communicate with your target market, you need to know the physical and geographic elements that describe your ideal customer, what makes them tick and why they like your product. Get Personal If You Want Results Rather than spending a lot of money in mass market advertising, in which we try to sell our product to everyone, we would be much better off by first spending some money trying to identify who are the likely people in our market to buy our products and then target those people with more intense efforts to develop a relationship, build trust and persuade them to buy. I can do a better job of delivering a higher quality message to a select, targeted group that fits the profile of my starving crowd because I can focus most of my resources on that smaller group. Mass marketing is very wasteful and inefficient. If I try to sell to everyone in the market, I will deplete my resources very quickly. We can no longer appeal to the masses; our marketing message needs to personally address the needs of our ideal customer and we need to communicate that message on a one to one basis. Business and Market Overview on Indonesia

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Khal Mastan ECONOMY. Indonesia is a market-based economy but the government plays a significant role in the country’s economy with 160 government-owned enterprises. Indonesias GDP per capita ranks fifth after Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia and Thailand. The Asian economic crisis of 1997 adversely affected the country economy and businesses and caused spiralling prices of necessities resulting in social unrest. Future prospects of Indonesia’s economy are bright with economic structural reforms in placed since the Asian economic crisis. Indonesias GDP was US$258.3 billion with a GDP per capita of US$1,193 in 2004. Indonesia’s real GDP grew at an average of 4.6% annually from 2000 to 2004 driven by domestic consumption accounting for nearly three-quarters of Indonesia’s GDP. Inflation rose from 3.8% in 2000 to 11.9% in 2002 but eventually declined to 6.1% by 2004. GDP per capita increased from US$801 in 2000 to US$1,193 in 2004 but unemployment also increased from 6.1% to 9.9% during the period. The manufacturing sector contributed towards 43.7% of Indonesia’s GDP in 2004 while the service sector contributed 40.9%. Though nearly 45.0% of the country’s workforce is involved in agriculture, this sector contributed only 15.4% of the country’s GDP during the period. Major industries include petroleum and natural gas, textiles, apparel, footwear, mining, cement, chemical fertilisers, plywood, rubber, food and tourism. Major agriculture products include rice, palm oil, rubber, cacao, peanuts, copra and cloves. DEMOGRAPHY. Indonesia comprises nearly 18,000 islands and has the largest population among the Southeast Asian countries with 217 million people in 2004. Main islands are Java accounting for 55% of the population followed by Sumatra (18%), Kalimatan (5%) and Sulawesi (6%). Other less populated islands include Irian Jaya, Bali and Nusa Tenggara. Indonesia is a country of diverse ethnic and sub-ethnic communities with different languages and dialects, cultures and foods. The Javanese accounts for 45% of the population followed by Sundanese (14%) and Madurese (8%) and coastal Malays (8%). Chinese who migrated to Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period account for nearly 5% of the population. Islam is the predominant religion followed by Christianity and minority religions include Buddhism and Hinduism. The national language is Bahasa Indonesia (similar to Malay used in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei). English is not widely used but many businesses and government officials dealing with foreign companies and foreigners are fluent in the language. More than half of the population live in the rural areas but the proportion of the urban population is increasing from 36.0% in 1995 to 45.0% by 2004. Major cities include Jakarta with a population of 10 million followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Medan and Padang.Nearly 25% of the population live below the poverty level while another 60% are from the lower income group. The remaining 10% belong to the middle income and 5% in the higher income group. Though Indonesia has a relatively small proportion of middle to high-income consumers, this equates to nearly 33 million consumers. This is more than Singapores 4.3 million population with a GDP per capita on par with many advanced economies of the European Union. INFRASTRUCTURE. Indonesia’s domestic telecommunication system is generally fair while its international services can be categorised as good. Internet broadband services are mainly concentrated in the major cities. Road systems are more developed on Indonesia’s populated island of Java, fairly developed in Sumatra and Sulawesi but poorly developed on the island of Kalimantan. Besides sea ports serving the international shipping lines, Indonesia are also served by smaller sea ports serving coastal shipping. All the cities and major towns are connected by airline services. INTERNATIONAL TRADE. Indonesia’s major trading partners include Japan, US, Singapore, South Korea and China. Much of the imports from Singapore are Singapores re-exports from other countries and exports to Singapore are re-exported to other countries. Main exports from Indonesia include oil and gas, electrical appliances, plywood, textiles and rubber products. Main imports include machineries and equipments, transport equipments, chemicals, fuels and foods. CONSUMER USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. Mobile phone penetration is just 13% of the populations, which is lower than Singapore (93%), Malaysia (67%) and Thailand (45%). Furthermore, there are only 10 million fixed-line telephones serving the whole country. The penetration of computers is less than 2% of the households and the country has only 1.2 million internet subscribers with an estimated 12 million internet users i.e. a penetration of only 0.5% of the population. Most middle and high-income homes would own televisions but the penetration in lower income homes is lower. Thus the household penetration of television in Java is nearly 60% and in Sumatra 52%. Similar scenario exists for refrigerators. RETAIL MARKET. Retail sales of food and non-food items totalled an estimated US$32 billion in 2004. Many Indonesians still shop at the traditional markets or mom and pop establishments but shopping at modern shopping malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, mini-markets and supermarkets is increasingly popular. There are nearly 5,000 such modern establishments in Indonesia accounting US$4.5 billion in retail sales in 2004. Most of these establishments are concentrated on the island of Java followed by Sumatra. Since 1998, the government opened the retail industry to foreign investments and participation. FOOD CULTURE. Indonesia’s food culture is diverse because of the various ethnic and sub-ethnic communities that comprise the country’s population. Typical meals eaten are rice-based dishes and occasionally noodles. However, there are many western franchise fast food outlets located mainly in the major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang and Yogyakarta. Mid to high-end bakery outlets serving western and local bakeries are also found in the major cities. You want to make the beach scene in that new bikini you bought on sale during the after-Christmas sale at the mall. There are a lot of weight loss programs on the market today for you to choose from, but you must be careful with which one you choose. Perhaps you should not choose one of the weight loss programs on the market and try to motivate yourself into losing the pounds yourself naturally. There are too many diet pills out here today to make a wise decision without extensive research. With the different diet plans, it is hard to determine which one is healthy. Do you choose the Atkins diet? Do you choose the Mediterranean diet? Do you choose the South Beach diet? It almost sounds like you are trying to choose where to go on vacation. Can these diet plans be healthy? Which one of these diet plans will provide you with the vital nutrients your body needs? How do you make the choice? Diet pills and diet supplements might not be the right thing for you to do. Look within yourself to find the motivation and stamina to start your own weight loss program. This should begin with a lower caloric intake, a change in lifestyle, and begin an exercise program. Exercise and lower caloric intake will increase your chances of a successful healthy weight loss. Here are a few simple changes in your lifestyle that will help you on your road to healthy weight loss: 1. Never eat standing up. 2. Never miss eating breakfast. 3. Eat your dinner no later than two hours before your bedtime. 4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. 5. Drink plenty of water. 6. If you must snack between meals, eat fruit. 7. Plan to eat all of your meals at the same time everyday. Making any of the above changes in your daily life will give you visible results in your quest to slimming down. Thinking about a fast to begin your weight loss program? Two Kids With One Lie - An Attorney’s Story Of A Mom Who Paid Too Heavy A Price!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

By Christopher Pearsall In most Rhode Island Divorce matters, the parents will often consider the best interests of the minor children. At least one parent, if not both, are proponents of keeping the children out of the scuffle and dealing with their issues as adults as far away from their children as possible. Unfortunately sometimes that doesn’t happen. In some cases, the children are pulled into the fray and in a few rare cases this MUST be so if a good divorce lawyer to to protect his or her client. What do I mean? Let me give you an example. Melinda and Brett have been married for 25 years. They have two children, Alexandra who is 15 years old and Timothy who is 17 1/2 years old. Brett is a bit obsessive about his “things” which includes his wife, who he sees as his “possession”. Brett’s home is his castle, he calls the shots and things are to be done his way without argument. Melinda and Brett have lived the same house for about 20 years. The house is paid off and only Brett’s name appears on the deed because he considers it “his” house. Melinda can’t take it any more and tells Brett that she wants a divorce and that things aren’t working for her anymore. Brett flies off the handle, smashes a kitchen chair and throws a drinking glass in Melinda’s direction causing it to shatter against the wall with shards of glass flying everywhere. Melinda is afraid, reaches for the telephone and tries to call for help. Alexandra and Timothy watch as their father pulls the phone out of their mother’s hand and then rips the phone cord right out of the wall. In front of the children Brett tells Melinda that if she files for divorce or if she leaves the house that he will kill her. Brett stomps around the house a bit more slamming doors and cupboards and breaking another object or two. Brett grabs his coat, warns Melinda not to leave the house and storms out. Alexandra and Timothy do not want their parents to divorce and plead with their mother not to call the police and to let their dad calm down and talk to him later. Melinda can’t bring herself to call the police so she listens to her children. Brett stays out until late at night, comes home and forces Melinda to have intercourse with him against her will. Melinda doesn’t tell her children. A few weeks pass. During that time Brett keeps reminding her that he will kill her if she files for divorce or tries to leave him. Brett begins demanding to know her whereabouts throughout the day and tells her that she must be home right after work “or else”. Melinda does want to disobey out of fear for her safety. Over the next few weeks Brett calls Melinda’s work constantly, begins following her around in his car and leaves countless messages on her cel phone telling her that he knows where she is at all times so she better not do anything. Melinda seeks legal counsel and has her attorney file for divorce. On the same day that her attorney is going to have Brett served, Melinda goes to her mother’s house until she sees how Brett is going to react. Later that day Alexandra finds out that her mother has gone to grandma’s house and she goes over to see what is going on. Brett is served with divorce papers that afternoon and rushes over to Melinda’s mother’s house where he continues to threaten Melinda in front of Alexandra. Thankfully, Melinda’s mother comes home and Brett abruptly leaves. Melinda, afraid for her son who is at their house goes back home to check on him. At her home Brett again threatens to kill her and pulls a knife from the nearby butcher block right in front of their son Timothy. Timothy tries to calm his father down and his father pushes him out of the way. While Timothy scuffles with his father, Melinda leaves and calls her attorney who gets an Ex Parte Emergency Order which orders Brett out of the house, places the children with Melinda and prohibits Brett from contacting her. Melinda is petrified. During the three weeks before the hearing, Brett follows Melinda with his car daily threatens her with physical violence when no one is around and and makes anonymous calls to her work and cel phone from local pay telephones so he cannot be traced. In each instance it is Melinda’s word against Brett’s word. Melinda’s divorce attorney meets with Alexandra and Timothy. They confirm the death threats their father made to their mother as well as ripping the phone out of the wall and smashing various household items. Melinda’s divorce lawyer knows that if the judge is going to continue the Order that keeps Brett out of the house that he may need the children either to testify or to speak with the judge and confirm these events since ordering a father from the marital home is an extreme remedy. In tears, calls her lawyer and has her lawyer go to court to get an emergency order restraining Brett from harrassing her. The judge grants the Emergency Order temporarily and enters it in the divorce proceeding. Melinda’s attorney meets with the children and asks them what events they have witnessed between their mother and their father and what they heard. The children substantially confirm that Melinda’s account to her divorce lawyer was correct and that the children witnessed it. Melinda’s attorney explains that it may be necessary for the children to speak with the judge about the events and that it is important for the children to tell the truth. Alexandra and Timothy promise the attorney that they will tell the truth if the judge wants to hear what they have to say regarding what happened. Brett retains a lawyer. On the day of the hearing Brett’s divorce lawyer objects to the Order, states that Melinda is lying about the incidents and asks that the Order be immediately removed so he can return to his home. Melinda’s lawyer argues vehemently that to remove the Order will subject Melinda to continued abuse and force her out of her home and away from her children because the events are true. The Rhode Island Family Court judge is not inclined to keep the Order in force without something other than Melinda’s word against Brett’s word. Melinda’s divorce lawyer asks the judge to speak briefly with the children to confirm that the abusive incidents did occur. Alexandra and Timothy are led into the judge’s chambers to give the Judge additional information to determine if the Emergency Order should remain in full force and effect. The following dialogue ensues: Judge: There’s no need to be nervous because nothing is going to happen to you here. You’re not in any kind of trouble or anything so you can just have a seat and rest easy. As the judge I just wanted to make sure I had all the information I needed when considering what to do when issues come before me. So I’m just going to ask you a question or two and then I’m going to speak with your parents and their lawyers. Alexandra and Timothy: [Nodding...] Judge: Now it’s important that you tell me the truth when I ask you something. You know that, right? Alexandra and Timothy: [Nodding again.] Judge: Good, so I just ask you a few questions, you tell me what happened and that’s pretty much it. Simple. Okay. Alexandra: Sure. Timothy: Yeah. Judge: Okay, now there was an argument between your mom and dad recently at your house. It was in the morning and you were both home. I know that. And I know you were home and you watched the argument or at least some of it. Do you both recall that? Alexandra: Yes. Timothy: Yup. Judge: Now, did either of you hear your dad say that he wanted to kill your mom? [The children look at each other and hesitate. . . ] Judge: Go ahead. Either one of you can speak. How about you young lady? Alexandra: It happened pretty fast. I know there was some yelling, but my dad has a loud voice. Judge: Okay, but did you hear your father make any threats to your mother? Alexandra: Well, his voice sounded threatening because he’s loud and he was angry but mom had just told him she wanted a divorce so I guess I can understand why he was angry. Judge: Alright, but did your father say he was going to kill your mother? Alexandra: Well, he might have said something about that he wanted to kill her for doing this to him or something like that but I don’t think he meant that he would really kill her. I don’t believe my dad could do that. He gets angry, but that’s not my dad. Judge: [Looking at Timothy.] Timothy: Alex is right. Dad was upset but if he said anything like that I think my mom misunderstood or something because she knows Dad would never hurt her. Judge: Okay. So your father was angry. Did he grab a weapon or anything? Timothy: No. He just had it. Judge: What do you mean he just had it? Timothy: Well, I can’t remember but I think my dad may have been making a sandwich when mom told him about wanting the divorce. Judge: What do you mean that he just “had it” though? Timothy: You know. When we make sandwiches we cut them with a steak knife. I think dad was just making his sandwich when he was told about the divorce and he had the steak knife in his hand and he talks with his hands alot so the knife was moving around in his hand. I could understand if mom got nervous but I don’t think it’s like he pulled a knife on her or something. Judge: Okay, last question. Did your father throw anything or do anything with the telephone that day? Alexandra: I think that was an accident. Mom went to call someone and dad grabbed the phone and the plug came out of the wall. Judge: That’s it? Alexandra: That’s what I saw. Judge: Okay… I’ve heard enough. Alexandra and Timothy are then taken from the Judge’s Chambers. Judge: The Order is vacated. The father can return to his home. Melinda’s Attorney: Judge I must object. This is endangering my client. The kids . . . Judge: The kids just confirmed for me that your client is LYING or that she is trying to set this man up to keep him out of his own house. YOU had no objecting to having the children talk to me and now I have the truth and you’re unhappy that it backfired on you so I don’t want to hear another word or I’ll find you in contempt and send you down to lockup. The Order is VACATED! Good day counsel! In the courtroom Alexandra and Timothy were sitting down cajoling with their father as I led their mother crying through the courtroom. The long and the short of this is that adults are not the only people that lie. This is a substantially true story which has been changed slightly to maintain anonymity. The children were questioned by the judge and they lied. They lied and it hurt their mother more than they will ever know. It placed their mother and her lawyer in a horrible position throughout the remainder of the divorce. Most importantly, it set a precedence whereby she was forced to move out of her home and was relentlessly stalked by her husband for more than a year and a half. Even now after the divorce is done and over with, this man still taunts her, threatens her and stalks her. This mother could no longer trust her children to back her up on the other occasions when her husband mentally tormented her and she could not trust that the legal system who had called her a liar would protect her. We all would like to think that our children are loving, loyal and will be there for us or better yet just that they tell the truth. Unfortunately, children are often manipulated by using their own feelings and desires. Whether you are in a Rhode Island Divorce or another proceeding in which you need to rely on what your children have said, seen or witnesses, first you must think about what happens if they do not tell the truth. Think and then think again . . . when you least expect it . . . and when it hurts the most . . . your children may surprise you. For those who are interested, Melinda’s attorney later discovered that Timothy had been promised a new car by his father if he told the judge his father hadn’t done anything. Timothy did, in fact, receive a new car just three (3) days after the hearing. Alexandra later apologized to her mother and stated that her father had been crying and that he would kill himself if he went to jail and that if she told the judge the truth that he would go to jail. While it is true that the father played on each of the children’s feelings, greed and weaknesses, the ultimate responsibility landed with the children. They had one responsibility. To tell the truth. Sadly, despite all the efforts of Melinda’s lawyer to achieve some level of safety for her, she paid the price for her children’s lack of honesty. Laser Hair Removal - It’s Easy, It’s Safe, It’s Affordble

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Tyson J Stevenson Today, there are numerous hair removal methods available such as: Tweezers, Shaving, Depilatories, Waxing, Hair Inhibitors, Threading, Laser hair removal, Sugaring and Electrolysis. Which will be the best for you? All hair removal candidates would like permanent hair removal and permanent laser hair removal is the only unique solution. Laser hair removal is gaining popularity among those looking for permanent hair removal. Nevertheless, permanent laser hair removal does not suit everyone. Before going for a laser hair removal you are recommended to go through these points. 1. Laser hair removal is best for dark hair with light skin but it does not mean that you are not the right candidate for the laser hair removal. You should visit a dermatologist before going for a laser hair removal and you should collect information on laser hair removal from the manufacturers or direct from their site. However, some dermatologists can suggest you some alternatives. If you have light color hair then artificial hair darkening is advisable followed by laser. 2. It is very important to have a consultation with a dermatologist. You should meet the technician and request him or her to perform a test pulse. You should find a clinic, which is dedicated to your needs. Laser hair removal treatment is very particular depending on the type of skin and hair. Find a clinic with a friendly and informative staff that makes you feel comfortable. 3. Avoid waxing and tweezering for at least 6 weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. You are advised not to remove hairs by the roots. Laser hair removal is a painless process. If there is a little pain, it is certainly bearable. If you cannot bear the pain during laser hair removal you should tell your technician so that he or she can supply you with numbing creams or proper coolants. Your feedback about pain will help the technician to adjust the intensity of the laser. However, Permanent Laser Hair Removal is one of the long lasting hair removal methods. However, re growth can occur after laser hair removal, which may be lighter in color. Disadvantages of laser hair removal: 1) A long-term data regarding safety, effectiveness and response rate of laser hair removal has not yet been established. 2) Sometimes regrowth takes place even after laser hair removal, which indicates laser hair removal is not 100% permanent. 3) Laser hair removal is generally not effective on gray, red, blonde or unpigmented hair. 4) Laser hair removal must be used very carefully because improper treatment can cause skin discoloration, burns, lesions or patchy regrowth. 5) Laser hair removal requires eye protection and skin cautiousness. Last Year Physician Resident Checklist

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Jim Fred Here is a last year resident checklist not to forget: LICENSING: Licensing is becoming increasingly complex as identity and medical fraud become more common. Therefore don’t wait till the last minute to start the process. The AMA reports that physicians should expect the process to take at least 60 days, and should plan their career moves accordingly. The highest volume of licensure applications is received between the months of April and September, when physicians with school-age children are making changes and residents who didn’t plan ahead are applying for licenses. Therefore the standard approval timeframes posted on a state medical board’s website don’t apply during this period and expect the process to take longer and act accordingly. Having a permanent address during residency enhances the process for licensing and other credentialing. Keeping your state licenses active is also very important. It makes getting additional state licenses much easier. Most state boards require verification of all licenses, regardless of status, before they will issue a new license. About half require you to submit a written statement explaining why you let any license expire or lapse. DEA: (Drug Enforcement agency) Unless you are a radiologist, you must have a DEA license to practice medicine anywhere in the US. You will need it to write any form of prescription. Your residency program may have a blanket hospital DEA license covering residents. This covers you during your training, however, you will eventually need a personal DEA. Having a permanent address and specified worksite in the same state as your original medical license makes the process much simpler. and you may be eligible for reduced student rates. UPIN: (Unique Physician/Practitioner Identification Number) As with your DEA, we recommend that you apply for a UPIN during your residency for some of the reasons mentioned previously; having a permanent address, having plenty of time to complete the process etc. The UPIN is assigned by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). It is asix-character alphanumeric code identifying you as a Medicare provider. Each individual practitioner receives one UPIN, regardless of the number of practice settings he or she works in. You will keep this UPIN throughout your Medicare affiliation, regardless of the state or states you practice in. CMS uses the UPIN to identify the ordering and referring physician, to aggregate payment and utilization information for individual practitioners, to ensure compliance with contractor recommendations for sanctions, and to validate duplicate services. BOARD CERTIFICATION: Board certification is evidence that you have successfully completed an approved educational and training program and passed a rigorous evaluation process. It demonstrates that you are prepared to provide quality patient care in your specialty. We highly recommend you get board certified because employers are increasingly demanding that you have it. It’s also just as important that you keep your certification current. All certificates issued by members of the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) are time limited. The limits range from six to 10 years, depending on the board and specialty. JAMES FRED ASSOCIATES: Since 1983, Jim Fred, the owner of James Fred Associates, http://www.physicianjobs.us has always had the policy of being a “candidate driven” recruiter. In other words to search for jobs for physicians, and not search for physicians for jobs. Jim Fred’s philosophy has always been to work for you in finding the best job for your career versus “client driven” recruiters who are working for the employer and trying to find them physicians, which means they are doing everything to screen you out of a possible job instead of everything to get you the right job as we do. James Fred Associates is also a member of a National Recruiter Network with over 100 other recruiters to help us reach your goal, and we have a combined Network Nation-wide database of recruiter physician jobs, many of which are unadvertised. A Look at Planting Flower Bulbs

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By Seth Miller Flowers are a favorite of many backyard gardeners. Thanks to their ease of planting and relatively low cost, flower bulbs are a popular choice for flower gardens. Not only are flower bulbs beautiful, but planting them is a very simple undertaking. Planting flower bulbs is so easy, in fact, that its almost foolproof. The most important consideration is timing. Flower bulbs need to be planted when the ground is coolnot too hot and not too cold. Its best to plant them about six weeks before the ground freezes. The next consideration is location. Youll want to choose a place where the soil drains wellbulbs do not grow well in areas with standing water. Bulbs also need a location that is well lit and sunny. Make sure that the soil is loose. It does not require any fertilization or special treatment. However, you might want to add compost or peat moss if youre working in a new flowerbed. The next consideration in planting flower bulbs is purely cosmetic. Youll want to consider the placement of the various flowers. Generally, bulbs should be densely plantedthey do not look as nice planted alone or in thin lines. Taller flowers should be planted behind short ones. Consider the finished product as you are planning your flower beds. Think about which color combinations work best together, as well as which varieties of flowers best complement each other. Once you have determined placement, you are ready to plant. Dig your holes about six to eight inches deep (follow package directions). Place the bulb in the ground with the pointed end facing up. Cover the hole and pack it firmly to release any air holes. Water the ground thoroughly. As you can see, planting flower bulbs is a fun and easy project. With a little patience and creativity, you can have a beautiful and enjoyable flower bed.
